Michael Kopnarski, Prof. Dr. rer. nat., born in 1957, studied physics at the University of Kaiserslautern from 1978 to 1991 and received his doctors‘ degree with his thesis „Investigations of the ionization of sputtered atoms by electron impact“.

He is the head of the institute of surface and thin film analysis IFOS at the TU Kaiserslautern, president of the German Vacuum Society DVG  and currently member of the research centres OPTIMAS (Optics and Material Science) and CASE (Kaiserslautern Center for Advanced Spin Engineering).

His main research interests are instrumental and applied surface and thin film analysis.
